For those of us who live
and work in the Greater Washington region, National Park
experiences are part of our daily lives. Commutes along
the scenic George
Washington Memorial and Baltimore-Washington
Parkways; bike rides and walks along the C&O
Canal and Rock Creek Park; golfing
and picnics at Haines Point; family camping adventures
in Greenbelt,
Catoctin and Prince
William Forest Parks; school outings and out-of-town-guest
expeditions to The
White House, Harpers
Ferry, Frederick
Douglass House, and Antietam
and Manassas National
Battlefields. All of these rich experiences contribute
to what makes living in the Greater Washington region
so special.
For visitors to the nation’s capital, the National
Parks of the Greater Washington Area are typically a first-stop
and a ‘must-see’. Peering out from the columns
of the Lincoln Memorial to see the Washington
Monument soaring to the blue sky; taking pictures
in front of the gates of the White House,
across from Lafayette Park; visiting Arlington
House at Arlington National Cemetery; touring the
battlefields of Antietam and Manassas.
Each of these exciting experiences can be counted as an
integral part of the itineraries of many DC area visitors.
The Greater Washington National Parks Fund (GWNPF) was
created to strengthen the enduring connection between
the American people and the National Parks of the Greater
Washington Area. GWNPF raises private funds and forges
partnerships with businesses and community and civic organizations
to strengthen the visitor experience at National Parks
throughout the Greater Washington region, and to educate
and inspire the public to help ensure the long-term protection
of these sites. GWNPF is an initiative of the National
Park Foundation, the Congressionally-chartered nonprofit
partner of America’s National Parks. |
